Johnson,
Lyndon Baines (1908–1973), 36th
president of USA (1963-69). He began the political career by a member of
the House of Representatives from state of Texas (1937-48), the firm
supporter of a policy F. Roosevelt. From 1948 hi was the senator of USA,
in 1953-61 - the leader of the democratic majority in the Senate. In
1961-63 - the vice-president of USA, becoming the president after murder J.
Kennedy. R. Nixon said about him: "the most capable and dexterous policies of our time", and E.
Stevenson said: "the master of art possible in a policy". In
December 1963 has addressed to General Assembly of the United Nations,
having called for the end of cold war, but in June 1964 has declared
readiness of USA for military actions for protection of the world in
Southeast Asia. The further policy, however, promoted escalation of war in
Vietnam that has resulted in serious complication of the soviet-American
relationship the next years his stay in the White house. In 1966 in the
interview to the American journalists published in magazine "America" in Russian, has declared existence of questions at issue and even
"very serious disagreements" between the USSR and USA, but has
expressed confidence that these disagreements can be eliminated by "worthy and peace way". Met the chairman of Council of Ministers of
the USSR A.N. Kosygin in Glassboro (1967). Though in Glassboro the certain
progress in a question concerning the agreement on non-distribution of the
nuclear weapon and restriction of strategic nuclear arms was achieved, A.N.
Kosygin has declared at press conference after end of a meeting, that
"it is impossible to expect for improvement of the soviet-American
relationship while USA make aggression against Vietnam". At the same
time after a meeting in Glassboro the first official contacts between the
USSR and USA have begun in the field of restriction of strategic armaments
(the beginning of negotiations was broken by the Soviet intrusion into
Czechoslovakia in August 1968), preparation of the nonproliferation Treaty
of the nuclear weapon was finished, the Agreement on an air communication
between USA and the USSR (1968) was signed. Hearings about participation
of Johnson
in murder of the predecessor continue to live. The author of books: My
